You have finally spotted a beautiful leather handbag and it looks ideal for you through the glass pane of the boutique. Now you need to identify if the leather hand bags are genuine. You certainly do not want to waste money off a fake leather handbag but how can you tell if the handbag you are about to purchase is genuine leather?

Identify a genuine leather handbag

1. Check the bag closely

Check the handbag label and if the label reads manmade, synthetic rexine or pleather material, then you can be sure that it is not genuine. What if the label reads 100 percent genuine leather, do you accept and purchase? At this point, the rest of the tricks below comes in handy.

Check the price of the bag and if its is too affordable, then it cannot be genuine as leather handbags do not come at a bargain price, and there is no seller who will make a loss to reduce the price.

Next, check the seams particularly where two cut edges come together. The manmade leather is thinner, and it has threads or fibres at the exposed ends which may feel like a sharp edge.

Genuine leather is thick with rough edges and also has needle-like holes. It stretches naturally; its holes are uneven, and they seem like they are close together on the thread while counterfeit leather has no elasticity; therefore, the needle holes are distinct and circular.

2. Feel the bag

Run your palm and fingers over the bag to feel its texture. Fake leather is smooth while genuine leather has some degree of smoothness and coarseness but it feels natural, it can be an uneven and irregular but pleasant to touch just like skin.

The genuine leather bag is also supple, and it stretches in all directions. When you stretch the material, the pebble like pattern will disappear then go back when it is released.

When you dig in the fingers over it, a real leather handbag will wrinkle, scratch but slowly regain its original form just like how the skin behaves after treatment. Fake leather will not regain its original form.

3. Smell the bag

The counterfeit leather is made of synthetic material, and it smells like plastic or reminiscent glue while genuine leather has a distinctive leathery smell.

4. Saliva and flame test

When you hold the flame near genuine leather, it does not catch the flame immediately, but it will burn when the flame is constantly applied.

Fake leather catches fire immediately and smells like fire as it burns. Genuine leather absorbs saliva while fake leather will not
